Weddings and the Beauty of Color

by: Diane Lynn Thomas

Colors…..aren’t they wonderful.  Turn your simple wedding reception into simply stunning with color.   The colors you choose will reflect your personality and what type of mood you want to create.  Soft colors will show elegance and simplicity and vibrant colors are bold and dramatic.  These colors can be used in favours, your wedding cake, linens,  floral, bridesmaids dresses and now even your wedding dress!  When you look back at your pictures you will be amazed.

A color wheel helps you choose coordinating colors. It is made out of three primary colors: red, blue and yellow, plus a blend of in-between colors. Below are three color-choosing strategies that will ensure you pick a well coordinated color scheme.

  • “Monochromatic” means variations of the same tone, such as bright red, dark red, etc.
  • “Complementary” colors means choosing colors that are opposite each other on the wheel, such as red and green
  •  ”Analogous” means the colors lie next to each other on the wheel, such as red, red-orange, and orange

Try to limit your selections to two or three color max for your wedding.  What colors work great with each seasons?  Here are some suggestions:

Fall colors ~ Burgundy, Dark Green, Navy Blue, Silver, Gold, Creams, Burnt Orange, Taupe, Brown and Plums.

Winter colors ~ Red, Silver, White, Cream, Burgundy, Sky Blue, Navy Blue, Purple, Plum and Gold.

Spring colors ~ Pink, Tangerine, Lilac, Periwinkle, Hot Pink, Fuchsia, Lime, Rose, Yellow, Cream, Soft Violet and White

If you are not sure if these colors fit the decor of your venue arrange a “mock” table set up, months before the wedding.  Ask your decorator to bring in a few linens and centerpieces to your venue and see the actual guest table set up. This will tell you how nice it goes with the halls decor and more importantly if you even like it.  I highly recommend this because on the day of your wedding if you walk into that room for the first time,  and are not pleased with your color scheme there isn’t that much you can do about it.
